My Weekly Writing Tip
WHY ANIMAL STORIES CAN BE "CRAP" Monday, 05 Apr 2010
You've probably read a lot of animal stories growing up but guess what? Publishers are reluctant to publish them. When looking through publishing catalogs the words "No anthropomorphic stories" pops up all the time. So how do you get your animal story past the "no anthropomorphic stories" barrier?

Like my violin teacher told me when trying to explain why I don't like a lot of modern music, "When Beethoven was composing, there were a lot of other composers out there and most of what they wrote was crap. Only a few really good composers survived." If you are determined to write an animal story, you must make it stand out from the rest. This is true of all writing but most especially when writing with animals as characters. These "characters" must be human in nature, fully developed with feelings and emotions, weaknesses and strengths. Your story must be stronger, more original and better written. And you cannot have inanimate objects like rocks become animate. Otherwise, like Beethoven's contemporaries who you've never heard of, you have written something that will not make it to the printed page, or,if you are lucky enough to have it published will be a quick return to the out-of-print pile.
