What I'm Reading
I am always reading books. Are you?

Here are some new books I’ve read and loved:

STOLEN by Lucy Christopher: When 16-year-old Gemma goes for coffee in the Bangkok airport, little does she suspect that the kind man offering to carry her coffee to her table is actually spiking it. And that soon, this same man, will kidnap her, and drag her from the airport, her parents and the life that she loved. This is not a book for the weak of heart. Lucy Christopher does an amazing job of making you feel as if you were the one kidnapped and hidden away in a desolate area of the Australian outback. You feel trapped and scared. And yet as time evolves, even you as a reader, begin to like your kidnapper to the point of confusion. A wonderfully written book that explores the emotions of those suffering from Stockholm Syndrome.

MATCHED by Ally Condie- Cassia is nervous about her matching ceremony, the event where boys and girls meet their match as determined by the Society. When Cassia is matched with Xander, Cassia is relieved and happy that she is to spend her life with her best friend. But a few days later, when plugging in her match microchip, instead of Xander's face, the chip displays the face of Ky, an Aberration. The Society explains the glitch away as a computer error. But as Cassia gets to know Ky, she is suddenly unsure. What if the match microchip was, in fact, right. Much like Lois Lowry's The Giver, Matched is a reflection on just how much government control is too much.

HEART OF A SAMURAI by Margi Preus: Based on the true story of Manjiro (later known as John Mung), this book, set in 1841, is a tale of adventure and danger. Manjiro is fourteen years old when his fishing vessel sinks, and he and the rest of the crew are lucky enough to make it to a tiny island - though it is miles from their small village in Japan. Unfortunately, the little island has little food. When an American vessel rescues them from starvation, Manjiro is fascinated with these "foreigners." The rest of the crew, however, view the Americans with suspicion. Manjiro's natural curiosity and open-mindedness will lead him from the Orient to the United States and back again in a lovely tale of human compassion and connection.
